Paterson Barbershops Face Limits

PATERSON -- In an effort to curtail crime, the City Council is weighing a proposal to prevent barbershops from staying open late at night.

Officials said the city's late-night barbershops have become crime magnets where unruly crowds gather and spill out into the neighborhood. A crime map distributed at Tuesday night's council meeting showed there are more than 20 such barbershops in "hot spot" locations.

"We have a lot of problems with these places," said Councilwoman Ruby Cotton, who represents the crime-ridden 4th Ward. "They're more like social clubs than businesses. People aren't coming in there at 12 o'clock to get their hair cut."

Under the initial proposal, the barbershops in residential neighborhoods would be forced to close at 11 p.m. But officials seemed willing to accept a compromise proposed by Councilman Julio Tavarez that would shut the shops down at 10 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and at midnight the rest of the week.

The initiative echoes a similar anti-crime effort last fall aimed at all late-night businesses, including liquor stores and takeout restaurants. …
