Christie Makes No Apologies - He's a Cowboys Fan

New Jersey's biggest booster will be a guest of honor when one of the state's NFL teams opens its season Sunday, playing in a nationally televised game of the league's opening weekend.

But don't expect Governor Christie to be rooting for the team that plays in the Meadowlands -- where this season ends with an outdoor Super Bowl.

No, he'll be cheering for their hated rival. And it's a fan-boy appreciation Christie won't apologize for, even if that means a good chunk of sports-loving New Jersey gets angry about that.

"I'm a Cowboys fan," Christie said in an interview on the NFL Network on Friday morning. "I'm proud of it. You've got to be true to the team you've been rooting for your whole life."

So on Sunday night, that means Christie, along with wife, Mary Pat, and their son, Andrew, will be sitting alongside Cowboys Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach. It's a sight sure to attract the cameras as Christie seeks a second term and is considered by many as a possible presidential contender in 2016.

And Christie knows that just won't sit well with a good chunk of the state.

"I know that that disturbs Eagles fans, Giants fans, Jets fans and probably fans of almost every other team in the NFL," he said at an event in Beach Haven on Wednesday.

He acknowledged that his choice is particularly unpopular among Giants fans, as the two teams have had a rivalry that dates back 50 years.

"They hate it. Giant fans obviously are more hateful of my rooting interest, but you know I told them right from the beginning when I was running in 2009, you get asked those kinds of questions and I didn't try to hide it."

But Christie is also quick to explain why he doesn't root for the Jets or the Giants. As he detailed Wednesday why he would be cheering on Big D on Sunday night -- as he does every Sunday during football season -- a woman in Beach Haven began shaking her head. …
