Ridgewood Supports Displaying Menorah

RIDGEWOOD -- A public Hanukkah menorah will be displayed for the first time this year in the village as part of its holiday decorations.

The entire council agreed Wednesday night that the village's residents should embrace its diversity by promoting inclusiveness.

The decision follows last month's presentation to the board by what has become informally known in Village Hall as "The Menorah Committee," which has championed for the privately funded menorah to be erected near Van Neste Park.

The group argued that displaying a menorah would better reflect the community of multi-faith and interfaith families.

Several residents spoke to the council at its meeting Wednesday, and all but one -- Ann Diamond -- supported the idea.

"To grant this request [for a menorah] would be setting a dangerous precedent," Diamond argued. "You will be abandoning the democratic principle of a separation between church and state."

Others said Ridgewood should join the 28 other towns in Bergen County that celebrate diversity and light menorahs for Hanukkah. …
