Jets Upset Bid Is Picked Off

FOXBORO, Mass. - For most of the game, the Jets' defense did its job. But Geno Smith couldn't find any fourth-quarter magic this time.

After directing the Jets to two go-ahead drives in the fourth quarter in an opening-day win, the rookie threw three fourth- quarter interceptions as New England held on for a 13-10 win over the Jets at Gillette Stadium.

After Aqib Talib's game-clinching interception, Jets center Nick Mangold was called for a late hit on Talib out of bounds. That sparked a brawl which resulted in the ejections of Jets offensive linemen Willie Colon and D'Brickashaw Ferguson.

All three interceptions came on underthrown passes. First, Smith rolled to his left and tried to hit Santonio Holmes on a crossing route. But the ball was slightly behind him, and Kyle Arrington deflected it into the hands of Talib at the New England 11.

It was a third-and-5 at the Patriots' 27, so had Smith not been picked off, Nick Folk could have attempted a game-tying 45-yard field goal.

Two possessions later, Smith faced a third-and-4 at the Jets' 46. He tried to hit Clyde Gates downfield, but the pass was short and Alfonzo Dennard cut in front of Gates to make the catch at the New England 31.

New England began the game with a quick six-play, 81-yard touchdown drive. Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie helped out the Patriots with a 16-yard penalty for pass interference. On third-and- 2 from the Jets' 39, Tom Brady hit a wide-open Aaron Dobson for an easy score off a play-action fake 2:06 into the contest. Nobody in the Jets' secondary picked up Dobson. It marked Brady's 50th consecutive regular-season game with at least one TD throw.

The Jets' first two possessions on offense didn't go very well. After a three-and-out on the first series, Smith hit Stephen Hill for 33-yard gain. But as Talib was tackling Hill, Talib jarred the ball loose with his foot and former St. …
