As Mets Keep Losing, Collins' Fate Up in Air

He has spent the past three seasons evaluating ballplayers, basing his judgments on everything from body language to bat speed. Terry Collins uses those evaluations as tools to coax better performances from the men who play for him.

But how would Collins evaluate himself? How would Collins judge his tenure in New York - a three-year term that is about to expire?

"You're graded out on, 'Did you get better?' " Collins said Monday. "And we think we've gotten some guys better. You do the best with the players you can in the clubhouse, make sure they work hard and get the job done.

"We've seen great improvement in some guys and some other guys haven't gotten it done. I don't ever sit down and think about ..."

He pivots, spinning the sentence in another direction without ever saying the words "my job."

"All I worry about is getting to the ballpark and making sure they're ready to play," Collins said.

It has been a rough year for the 64-year-old manager. On Saturday, the Mets clinched their fifth straight losing season. They enter tonight's game against the San Francisco Giants with a record of 67-82. If they cannot win seven of their final 13 games, they will finish the year with their worst record since Collins took the reins in 2010.

Injuries have helped to torpedo this season. Matt Harvey and Jeremy Hefner both suffered season-ending elbow tears. David Wright has missed a chunk of the year with a strained hamstring. The list goes on: Frank Francisco, Jon Niese, Jenrry Mejia, Ike Davis, Travis d'Arnaud ...

"You walk into spring training and you figure you've got Johan Santana, which you said, 'Hey, this guy's going to be healthy,'" Collins said. "David Wright, Matt Harvey - all the pieces that should've been here, when they're not here, it's tough to find answers to them.

"We've asked a lot of some young guys. …
