Tuck Has No Use for History Lesson

EAST RUTHERFORD - The Giants have indeed been here before.

Just don't tell Justin Tuck because he doesn't want to hear it.

"I'm tired of that phrase: 'We've been here before,' " Tuck said, sending a message Monday afternoon he hopes sets a tone within the locker room and eventually translates with improved play on the field. "So what -- if you hear me use that phrase again, you have permission to punch me in the stomach. I'm just tired of it. It's on record.

"You have permission. I might hit you back, but I'll respect you a lot. Just remind me not to use that phrase."

In the hours following Sunday's 41-23 loss to the Broncos, the one that dropped their season record to 0-2, there has been plenty of mention about the only other time the Giants have lost their first two since Tom Coughlin took over as head coach in 2004.

That season finished up on the complete opposite end of the NFL spectrum, of course, under a shower of celebratory confetti in Phoenix with a victory six seasons ago in Super Bowl XLII.

At this point, two disappointing games into what was supposed to be a promising campaign, the Giants have promised to stop worrying about the forest long enough to focus on the trees, beginning Sunday against Carolina, which also finds itself winless.

Asked if the Giants returned to work more desperate the morning after suffering a second consecutive defeat, cornerback Terrell Thomas said: "Heck yeah, gotta be. We've gotta battle. This is not '07. This is 2013 and we've got our work cut out for us."

For what the Giants are desperate is the emotion and camaraderie that comes with winning, which they have not experienced since Week 1 of the preseason in Pittsburgh.

The burning desire to recall what victories feel like is there, front and center, as a team with Super Bowl aspirations attempts to rediscover its mojo.

"It's time for us to start executing," Tuck said. …
