Two New York Men Charged after Pound of Crack Is Found

FORT LEE -- Police have charged two men from New York with narcotics possession after finding about a pound of crack cocaine in their vehicle -- possibly the single largest crack-related arrest in more than a decade, authorities said.

Efrain Gonzalez, 37, of Washington Heights and Audris Gonzalez, 38, from the Bronx were stopped by Fort Lee police on Route 4 west near the Englewood border on Sept. 18 for tailgating, authorities said.

When the officers approached the silver Nissan Sentra, they smelled marijuana coming from the glove compartment, and Audris Gonzalez admitted smoking it in the car, police said. Efrain Gonzalez, who was driving with a suspended license, denied the officers' request to search the vehicle, police said.

The detectives arrested Audris Gonzalez after learning that he had traffic warrants out in Fort Lee. They issued motor vehicle summonses to Efrain Gonzalez before releasing him, then towed the rented Nissan to police headquarters.

After obtaining a search warrant, the detectives found about 1 pound of crack cocaine in the trunk, worth an estimated $60,000, police said. …
