Rangers' Talbot Making Debut

Article excerpt

GREENBURGH, N.Y. -- The childhood dream never seemed like a possibility until the final days of Cam Talbot's collegiate career.

Tonight, it becomes a reality.

The 26-year-old rookie netminder, an undrafted free agent out of Alabama-Huntsville, will make his NHL debut subbing for the injured Henrik Lundqvist as the reeling Rangers (2-5-0) continue their season-opening, nine-game road trip against the Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.

Lundqvist missed his third straight day of practice and is day to day, but will not dress tonight. Jason Missiaen, recalled from Hartford (AHL), will back up Talbot.

"It was not until the last weekend, the CHA [College Hockey America] tournament when I really started to think things could happen," Talbot said after the Rangers' practice Wednesday. "My advisor told me teams had been calling him after that weekend. We ended up winning that tournament and going to the NCAA tournament.

"It's been an unbelievable ride so far and I'm just taking it in," added Talbot, signed by the Rangers on March 30, 2010.

Talbot, who grew up in Caledonia, Ont. idolizing Hall of Fame goalie Patrick Roy, has played at Hartford for all or parts of the last three seasons and was the Wolf Pack's starter to begin this season.

But veteran Marty Biron was shaky in his two appearances, including allowing four goals on 17 shots in his only start, a 5-3 loss at St. Louis on Oct. 12. He announced his retirement Sunday, five days after being assigned to Hartford.

So now it's Talbot's turn to prove to coach Alain Vigneault he can back up Lundqvist.

"I have to approach it like it's any other game," Talbot said. "It's going to be tough to control my emotions but I just have to do my best to settle myself down and concentrate on my game."

Vigneault has said, given this season's compacted schedule due to the Olympics, he needs his backup to provide 15-20 quality starts. …
