Halloween's Return a Happy Event for Most

Following a two-year hiatus, Halloween was back on Oct. 31 in North Jersey.

Sure, there were drizzly skies. But nothing like Superstorm Sandy that last year canceled the tradition. Or the surprise snowstorm that in 2011 cut power to thousands with downed utility lines proving too dangerous for any door-to-door activity.

For Little Ferry resident Betsy Lugo, Thursday's excursion with her 6-year-old daughter, Arianna -- a princess on this night -- and 14-year-old son Marcelino -- a Prohibition-era gangster -- Halloween was even more special.

"This is a great day and a big deal," said Lugo, who lost her home near Indian Lake to flooding. "It's because of the generosity of the community that we are still in Little Ferry and back out here for Halloween."

As she and her children canvassed the neighborhood near Bassano Field with a large group of moms, dads and kids, she talked about how her family had lost nearly everything they owned. Support from the community had allowed them to remain in Little Ferry. …
