Patrick Ewing was given a huge ovation from the crowd at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday when he was introduced as the associate head coach of the Bobcats. Friday in Charlotte he got a career first when he served as head coach.

Bobcats coach Steve Clifford was admitted to a local hospital Thursday night, undergoing tests after he did not feel well. He had two stents placed in his heart, and while he was resting comfortably, it left Ewing to handle the head coaching duties.

"It is ironic that I played 15 years in New York [and] my first opportunity to be a head coach is against the Knicks," Ewing said. "But I am nervous. I talked to a few of my friends -- Jeff Van Gundy is one of them. When I played I was never nervous before the game. As a coach the butterflies are flowing. So he was like, 'Look, just take your time, take a deep breath and relax, you'll be fine. …
