COUPLE GOT NEWS ON U.S. BASE IN LIBYA

I was a very young bride stationed with my new husband, newly minted Air Force Lt. Frank Nusspickel, at Wheelus Air Force Base in Tripoli, Libya. We had been in Tripoli for several months and I was getting used to being on my own without family and friends. We went to a movie at the base theater. In the middle of the movie, the lights went on and an officer in uniform appeared onstage. "It has been reported that President Kennedy has been shot. The base is on Red Alert. Do not leave the theater. Await further orders," he announced. The movie resumed while conversations and questions buzzed. Shortly, the house lights were turned on again. The same officer came onstage and announced, "It has been confirmed. The president has been assassinated. All personnel report to Alert stations. All dependents must evacuate."

We knew what danger the country and ourselves were in. This was unprecedented and a perfect time for an attack on the United States. …
