Lindsay's Presence Puts Smile on Pct

Article excerpt

WAYNE -- Drew Lindsay felt helpless.

Out with an undisclosed minor injury Nov. 8, Passaic Tech's defensive leader was forced to watch his team's 41-18 loss to undefeated Ridgewood from the Bulldogs' sideline.

"I was angry because I couldn't help out my team," Lindsay said. "But this time there's going to be a big difference."

The hard-hitting junior linebacker's return is one of the primary reasons the third-seeded Bulldogs believe they have a legitimate shot at upsetting second-seeded Ridgewood on the road Friday night in the North 1, Group 5 football semifinals.

"Having him on the field makes a huge difference," Passaic Tech senior running back Thomas Jefferson said after the Bulldogs beat Hackensack, 40-6, in a first-round game. "He's aggressive and he has this motor that doesn't stop. He wants to hit so much and I think that'll be a huge difference-maker in this game."

Lindsay leads Passaic Tech (8-2) with 93 tackles. Eighteen of them have accounted for losses, and he has caused four fumbles in nine games.

The Bulldogs are well aware, however, that it'll take a complete team effort to slow down a Ridgewood offense that has run roughshod over every team it has played this season. Senior defensive lineman Enmanuel Soriano (61 tackles, 10 for losses, five sacks) and senior safety Travelle Curry (73 tackles, five interceptions, 15 passes defended) will be among the Bulldogs who'll help Lindsay try to keep the Maroons from producing points at their usual rapid rate.

Thanks largely to a diverse rushing attack, Ridgewood (9-0) averages 51.6 points per game and has won by an average margin of 40.4. Passaic Tech held the Maroons to a season-low 41 points 10 days ago, but Passaic Tech coach Matt Demarest knows his defense must limit the Maroons more than that if the Bulldogs are to reach their first sectional final in 12 years. …
