Westwood Passing Game Is in Rare Air

One of North Jersey's all-time best quarterback-receiver duos is also among the all-time smartest.

Westwood senior quarterback Craig Carmilani and junior receiver Nolan Borgersen are Ivy League recruits who take the lessons learned in the classroom and carry them onto the football field.

"My work in school, and what school has taught me, has really helped me prepare for games and be able to make the decisions I do," said Carmilani, whose top-seeded Cardinals face No. 3 Waldwick/ Midland Park in the North 1, Group 2 final Saturday at Kean University.

Carmilani's decision-making has enabled the quarterback to produce one of North Jersey's all-time best seasons. He has completed 132 of 197 passes (67 percent) for 2,762 yards and 33 touchdowns. The 6-foot-1 right-hander also has rushed 80 times for 552 yards and 16 TDs while sitting out most fourth quarters due to lopsided scores.

"School brings study skills, and when preparing for a big game, you've got to study," said Carmilani, who has a 3.8 grade-point average. "Basically, you're studying the other team while you're watching the film, and that's a big part."

Opponents who have studied film of Westwood then often double- team Borgersen. Still, that hasn't stopped the 6-2, 188-pound speedster from catching 79 passes for 1,749 yards, and his 25 TDs are believed to be the single-season state record.

"To see the field, the whole field, a football IQ is really important," said Borgersen, who also has a 3.8 GPA and is being recruited by the Ivy League as well as several major Division I programs. "I think it transfers over from school, and that's definitely helped our chemistry."

"From an intelligence standpoint, they're great," said Westwood coach Vito Campanile, a former All-State quarterback for Paramus Catholic. "They're great academic kids, and they're great football- acumen kids. …
