Yanks Target Infante; Mets Stay Active

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Second base was never a second thought when Robinson Cano was in the Yankees' employ. For the past seven seasons - four of them All-Star years -- he averaged 160 games at the position.

Now, Cano's departure to Seattle as a free agent has created a worrisome gap in an already suspect infield.

On Thursday, the Yankees moved to address the issue with a three- year $24 million offer for right-handed hitting free-agent second baseman Omar Infante, though it might not be enough in this exploding market.

Infante's camp is said to be requesting a fourth year and $36 million to $40 million, and the 31-year-old infielder has reportedly drawn serious interest from the Royals.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman already had exited the Winter Meetings prior to Thursday morning's Rule 5 Draft, which unofficially concludes the four-day event. The GM's only transaction was to complete a previous trade of catcher Chris Stewart to Pittsburgh, receiving minor-league pitcher Kyle Haynes.

Meanwhile, the Mets introduced outfielder Curtis Granderson, agreed to sign starter Bartolo Colon and set the groundwork for one or more trades.

"We're happy with the way our four days went," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "We've made some progress on the trade front; we've talked to a lot of free agents.

"So from that standpoint, we're very happy and positioned to do perhaps some other things later on."

First baseman Ike Davis is drawing keen interest from the Brewers. The Mets have also discussed the possibility of dealing Daniel Murphy, which could create - at least temporarily -- their own question mark at second base.

On Wednesday, the Yankees rejected the Reds' offer of second baseman Brandon Phillips for outfielder Brett Gardner. Cashman currently envisions an outfield featuring Gardner and Jacoby Ellsbury, though he admitted that plan might change. …
