On the face of it Rutgers' move to the Big Ten later this year isn't coming at a particularly good time, considering that the Scarlet Knights finished 6-7 in 2013, including a frustrating Pinstripe Bowl loss to Notre Dame on Dec. 28.

"I think as a program we're disappointed," coach Kyle Flood said on a conference call Monday when asked to evaluate the 2013 campaign. "As the head coach, I'm disappointed. We have high expectations for our program.

"For us to get ready for the Big Ten," he added, "we first have to get ready for the spring."

And it appears the biggest objective during the spring will be for Rutgers to find a starting quarterback. Flood, who gave a vote of confidence to the embattled Gary Nova going into spring 2013, did no such thing Monday. He declined to say who would be No. 1 on the depth chart heading into spring practice, which begins in March.

Nova, the Elmwood Park native whose inconsistent play and penchant for turnovers earned him a spot on the bench for the last three games of this season, isn't guaranteed anything despite nobody else on the roster having taken a snap at quarterback during a game.

"We've got a lot of quarterbacks on our roster right now," Flood said, "and every one of them is going to get more than enough snaps this spring, so that we can figure out who the starting quarterback will be as we go into next season."

Any one of the untested group of Chris Laviano, Blake Rankin and Mike Bimonte apparently will have a chance to unseat Nova, a former Don Bosco star.

"I will be more than confident," Flood said, "playing the quarterback that does the best job protecting the football, making the right decisions that we coach him to make and then locating the football the best he can. I think experience is great as long as you're improving.

"But ultimately," he added, "we need to find the quarterback on the roster who can do those three things better than the other quarterbacks. …
