New Milford resident Jenna Gorman is a 23-year-old certified personal trainer who trains clients via her "Fit By Jenna" services in her hometown. Recently, she began training individuals at the Lucille Roberts gym in Fair Lawn (she's currently pursuing her certification for group training). Here, she shares what motivates her clients most, why spot-reducing is a myth and how exercising can save your life.

Q. What kind of training do you need to become a personal trainer?

You have to complete a nationally accredited program, offered by organizations like the American College of Sports Medicine or the American Council on Exercise. Most are online programs. You want to be certified so you can work at any gym. The time to complete varies; for me it took three months.

Q. Have you ever had someone get ill while you're training?

I have had people throw up in my sessions because they came not feeling good. Let me know if you're feeling sick - I don't want you to kill yourself.

Q. What is the No. 1 excuse people give for not exercising?

Probably [lack of] time, as cliche as that sounds. They'll hire me and then tell me repeatedly they can't make it to the session. A lot of times it's because they're just unmotivated or uncomfortable working out.

Q. What do you tell people to motivate them to exercise?

I talk to them about health and about how many people in the country are dealing with diabetes and heart disease. People get scared when you bring up statistics; that's motivation enough for a lot of people.

Q. How much and what do you eat every day?

I have five to six small meals a day. I never used to eat breakfast, but now that I exercise I wake up starving. For breakfast I usually have eggs and toast with fruit, and as a midmorning snack banana with peanut butter. Lunch is my biggest meal because that's when I'm the most hungry. I eat tuna a lot, so I'll have a big salad with baby spinach, tuna, oil and vinegar and a bunch of veggies. After a workout, I'll have a protein shake, and for dinner steak, chicken or fish with potatoes and veggies.

I had a client who got into a bad car accident and the doctor was very surprised that she wasn't seriously hurt. …
