District 5

at Don Bosco

Schedule: Friday: Preliminary and quarterfinal rounds, 5 p.m.; Saturday: semifinals 10 a.m., consolations 1 p.m., finals to follow.

Teams: Don Bosco, Indian Hills, Mahwah, Manchester, Northern Highlands, Paramus, Ramapo, Ramsey, Waldwick/Midland Park.

Returning champions: Don Bosco's Luis Gonzalez looks to become a four-time champ, twice in D5, while teammates Luke Farinaro and Zack Chakonis, and Joe Trovato of Paramus are going for three straight. Paramus teammates Alex Sebahie, Justin Cochran and Ryan Freeman, who won in D8 last year, and Bosco's Kyle Bierdumpfel look to repeat. Sam Cali of Don Bosco, who won a district title in 2012, seeks his first title in D5 after losing to Trovato last season.

Defending team champion: Don Bosco sent nine wrestlers to the finals and came away with six titles to edge second-place Paramus for its third straight crown.

Outlook: This again should come down to a battle between Bosco and Paramus, both of which finished in the top five in the Bergen Holiday tournament and have the individual talent to be strong tournament teams. Northern Highlands, with big-time wrestlers at several weights, could sneak up and make itself a factor.

Prime bouts: Farinaro leads a talented field at 170 that could include Brandon Latierno of Northern Highlands and Nick Bucci of Paramus. Bucci beat Latierno for third place at 182 in the Bergen Holiday tournament. If Sean Kelly of Northern Highlands drops to 145, it sets up a possible rematch with Cochran in a tough weight class. Kelly pinned Cochran in the first period last month. Northern Highlands' Alfonse De'Maria has gone unbeaten since dropping down to 106 last month and could face Bergen Holiday third Evan DeLuise of Don Bosco in the final. Kyle Cochran of Paramus had a huge win over Wayne Valley's Tyler Hrycak last weekend, but he will face an uphill battle in Bierdumpfel at 126.

District 6

at Fair Lawn

Teams: Elmwood Park, Fair Lawn, Garfield, Glen Rock/Saddle Brook, Hawthorne, Lodi, Paramus Catholic, Ridgewood, Teaneck.

Returning champions: Ridgewood's Joe Oliva looks to win his third title in four years, as does Mike Andreano of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook, who lost to Oliva in last year's final. Jarred Rose of Fair Lawn and Zack Hunko of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook are aiming for their third straight. Dom Salvatore and Tom DeOliveira of Lodi, Stephen Gerdner and Sukmin Yoon of Ridgewood, and Chris Jacobson of Glen Rock/Saddle Brook seek to repeat. Garfield's Adam Barno looks to regain the title he lost last year.

Defending team champion: Ridgewood won the first district title in program history, outdistancing second-place Lodi by 41 points and third-place Glen Rock/Saddle Brook by 44. …
