PHILADELPHIA - Jaromir Jagr knew the importance of this one for the Devils, calling it beforehand "a playoff game."

Jagr, 42, then went out and did his best to make sure the Devils didn't lose.

The Hall of Famer had a goal and an assist, including the go- ahead tally 7:42 into the third period, to propel the Devils to a 2- 1 victory over the Flyers on Tuesday night at Wells Fargo Center.

Jagr snapped a 1-1 tie with a backhand from the right edge of the crease that went off the blocker of Flyers goaltender Steve Mason and snuck in on the short side for goal No. 702 of his career. Goaltender Martin Brodeur made it stand up, by making 30 saves for his fourth consecutive win overall and 50th over the Flyers.

"For us, most of the games are playoff games, that's for sure," Jagr said. "When you play against a team in the same division, those are huge for us and now have to grab it."

With the victory, the Devils improved to 5-2-0 since the Olympic break and kept pace in the Eastern Conference postseason race by staying two points out of a playoff spot. They climbed within two points of the Flyers, who fell into the last wild-card spot in the East; and remained two points back of Columbus, which beat Detroit and took over third place in the Metropolitan Division from the Flyers on a tiebreaker.

"We knew we had to come out of here with a win and we showed up, and I thought really battled hard and left everything on the ice," Devils coach Pete DeBoer said. "It wasn't a pretty game, but we got the job done."

The Devils killed off six Flyers power plays and survived a ruling on an apparent tying goal by Scott Hartnell that was disallowed with 40.1 seconds remaining.

Hartnell drove to the net to redirect Jakub Voracek's pass from the right circle. Brodeur slid to his right to make a pad save and the rebound hit Hartnell in front. …
