* Community (8-5) has won four of its last five games. The Teaneck-based private school has received solid performances from its starting lineup. Sophomore Gary Sylvester is the team's leading scorer at 15 points per game. Seniors Jose Benitez (eight) and Tristan Duncan and juniors Tim Mmiller and Bryan Tarusek (11 each) also have contributed.

* Elmwood Park senior F Ve'Shawn Polite leads North Jersey in free throws made with 151 through Sunday, based on results reported to The Record. Polite, who shoots 77 percent, is followed by DePaul senior Juwuan Carter (137), Old Tappan senior Troy McLaughlin (106) and Teaneck freshman Leondre Washington (96).

* Senior F Ryan Warnet has been a catalyst for Indian Hills (11- 5). The 6-foot-3 Warnet had 16 points and 15 rebounds in a 55-50 victory a week ago over Hackensack. He recorded 17 points and 15 rebounds in Saturday's 50-43 win against Pascack Valley in the Bergen Jamboree. Warnet averages 16.8 points per game.

* Kennedy sophomore guard Alphonso Gee is set to return to the Knights' starting lineup tonight at home against Passaic Tech. Gee, who's averaging 23.7 points, 3.7 assists and 2.1 steals, has missed five games since suffering a mild concussion and a cut over his right eye during a face-first fall in a 55-45 victory over Hackensack on Jan. 26.

* Lakeland's 79-62 upset of West Milford a week ago marked the 8- 9 Lancers' second significant sign of improvement in a week under first-year coach Ryan McCarney. Lakeland lost to West Milford, 84- 62, the first time the teams played Jan. 7. On Jan. 28, Lakeland upset Passaic Valley, 59-56. The Hornets beat Lakeland, 59-25, the first time the teams met Dec. 20.

* Passaic Valley senior F Stefan Minic had perhaps the best stretch in his three years as a varsity starter last week. Minic returned from a groin injury that sidelined him for three games to score 18 points in a 57-49 defeat of Paramus Catholic a week ago. He then surpassed 1,000 points on his way to scoring a season-high 27 in a 68-61 victory over West Milford on Thursday night. He added a 20-point performance Saturday in a 56-43 win against Pompton Lakes in the first round of the Passaic County tournament. …
