NEW YORK - Free agent Stephen Drew goes another day without a game, as idle as the Yankees were Tuesday.

The early rainout against the Chicago Cubs gave the Yankees more time to rest their nicked-up veteran infielders. Moves were made to bolster the club, but nothing - at least yet - has prompted the Yankees to act on someone such as Drew.

Veteran infielder Scott Sizemore and catcher John Ryan Murphy were recalled from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, with catcher Francisco Cervelli placed on the 60-day disabled list due to a Grade 2 right hamstring strain.

Shortstop Derek Jeter, rested the past two games due to a tight right quad, is expected to play at least one of today's separate admission, day-night doubleheader games against the Cubs. However, second baseman Brian Roberts remains day to day following a lower back issue.

And the Yankees might not be getting Mark Teixeira (strained right hamstring) back in time for this weekend's series at Tampa Bay.

Agent Scott Boras wouldn't be doing his due diligence if he weren't periodically checking in with his frequent business partner, reminding the Yankees of Drew's willingness to try third base. Boras client Kendrys Morales, viewed now as more designated hitter than first baseman, is also available.

But both players are tied to draft compensation, having rejected their former clubs' one-year, qualifying offers of $14.1 million.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman repeated Tuesday that he's not at liberty to comment on available free agents but that he has ongoing dialogue with ownership on how to improve the club.

One MLB scout following the AL East believes that the Yankees' willingness to go after a player such as Drew hinges on Teixeira's health.

"I think Teixeira's the key - a productive Teixeira," said the scout, who also has his doubts about Drew's ability to effectively play a position other than shortstop.

"He's a serviceable, dependable shortstop," the scout said of Drew, 31, who has never played another position in the majors. …
