At Central Scrimmage, Austin Fuchs Impresses in New QB Role

Maybe Jacob Hester's absence won't leave a gaping hole at quarterback after all. Junior Austin Fuchs threw scoring passes to six different receivers in Central High School's scrimmage against visiting Boonville on Friday night.

"He spread the ball around nicely," said Bears football coach

Andy Owen, noting that Fuchs started at safety all of last season and also moved into the starting lineup at wide receiver during the playoffs.

"He had a lot of experience at the varsity level on a good team," Owen said. "He's a very hard worker and a tremendous athlete. He can do things with his feet also. He will do a very nice job in our league (the Southern Indiana Athletic Conference)."

Now a freshman at DePauw, Hester earned Class 4A all-state honors in throwing for 2,740 yards and 24 touchdowns in lifting Central to its second sectional title in school history. He ended his career as the Bears' second-leading passer in school history with 7,487 yards. Chris Owen, Andy's younger brother, is Central's career leader with 8,102 yards, 13th on the state's all-time list. …
