Petition organizer deserves apology

I am writing in response to the Aug. 12 editorial. I realize we have free speech in this country, but just because you're the Opinion Page editor of the Courier & Press doesn't necessarily mean that you should or can ridicule others who have opinions differing from yours.

I feel it would be in your best interest to offer an apology to Bruce Ungethiem.

His actions were not frivolous or "silly" as you stated. There were 460 questionable signatures on the petition drawn up for consolidating the city and county governments. I disagree with your insinuation that any "X" or illegible mark should be counted.

Were all of these registered Vanderburgh County voters? This was not a petition to decide whether or not the picket fence should be painted. This petition ultimately resulted in a consolidation "plan" that, if approved, will negatively affect every Evansville- Vanderburgh citizen. There are a few exceptions: The newly-elected mayor and all his appointed friends stand to gain admirably from it.

We cannot afford to pass a plan that is so open-ended and so poorly constructed that those in favor of it fail to come up with positive, concrete answers to just about any question that is offered concerning it. "I don't know" is their standard reply.

The CORE (Citizens Opposed to Reorganization of Evansville) group's opposing views are backed by research supporting the facts they present.

Mr. Ungethiem is to be commended for much of that research.

I sincerely hope you soon learn to "do unto others..." before you strike out again at CORE (or anyone else who disagrees with you) again.
