HENDERSON, Ky. -- Not long after Equibase chart-caller and Courier & Press turf writer Cliff Guilliams died in 2008, Ellis Park moved swiftly to honor him. The Philip Oliber-trained Final Count won the fifth running of the $50,000 Cliff Guilliams Memorial on Monday, the last day for live racing at Ellis Park this summer, with Corey Lanerie aboard.

"I'm the one who suggested -- in fact, insisted -- that we have the race named after him," said track owner Ron Geary. "He was a great guy -- a great fan -- and he loved Ellis Park. We loved him, and I think he's probably smiling right now."

Smiling, even under stormy skies Monday that moved the scheduled 1 1/16th-mile turf race to a mile on sloppy dirt.

Final Count ran it in 1:37.46, and Lanerie said the surface might have made the difference for a horse that now has won twice this year in seven starts. …
