Western Kentucky School District Considers Performing Arts School

PADUCAH, Ky. - A Western Kentucky school district is considering the option of a public school that's focused on an education in the performing arts. The Paducah Sun reported district personnel are preparing a feasibility study to see if students would benefit from a school that offered classes in music, dance and theater.

Tina Hayes, who directs the district's Gifted and Talented program, told the newspaper there's been a shift in the focus of the program for performing arts.

"We started looking at our visual performing arts program and we decided that it needed some restructuring," Hayes said. "Looking at the needs of our visual performing arts students, we thought we needed to get services to them."

Assistant Superintendent Heath Cartwright said the group studying the issue will consider need, curriculum and possible locations.

"Another piece of the feasibility study will be a cost analysis," Cartwright said. "That would be everything from the cost of programming to the outside professionals who come in to provide services, and even the teaching staff. …
