Telethon to Aid Sandy Victims ; Red Cross Event Is Today

Area residents looking to make a local impact in the disaster relief effort following superstorm Sandy will have their chance during a telethon today. In cooperation with WIKY radio station and WTVW Channel 7, the American Red Cross Evansville-Wabash Valley Region will host the Tri-State Gives Back telethon from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The 12-hour telethon will feature recognizable local faces such as Norm Bafunno, president of Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana; Pat Koch of Holiday World & Splashin' Safari; Linda Voss, CEO at American Red Cross, River Valley Region; Eric Williams, Vanderburgh County sheriff; and Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.

Each volunteer will put in time and effort handling calls on the phone bank.

"No. 1, you donate to the Red Cross; you know it's going to critical services that are provided to people in times of crisis," said Sheriff Williams, who has served on the board at the local Red Cross since shortly after the deadly tornado that struck Evansville and Newburgh in November 2005.

"They're one of the organizations that communities need, and it's a matter of paying it forward."

As a first responder, Williams has spent a lot of time coordinating with Red Cross and similar organizations that help people in times of need. Williams noticed the effort following the tornado and spoke with a past director at the Red Cross, asking if he could help out. …
