Garden Books Make Welcome Gifts

Access to quick answers via computer has taken the place of establishing a home library filled with garden books, or has it? I use both when answering readers' questions, researching speech topics, or just for my own information. With the upcoming holidays in mind, I visited a local bookstore to create a list of reading materials for gardeners of all ages. Perhaps one of these will either fill a void in your collection or will serve as an ideal gift for a relative or friend.

As our attention has switched from outdoor to indoor gardening, the first book I selected was "The Indoor Plant Bible" by Dorte Nissen. The cover states that this is the essential guide to choosing and caring for indoor, greenhouse and patio plants. Symbols used are identified near the front of the book along with an alphabetized list of plants. Each plant's descriptive page gives information on use, plant descriptions, light and position, temperature range, water, feeding, special care, pests and diseases, other species and propagation.

For an example, with eyes closed, I pointed to Mandevilla hybrids, page 166. A tender plant in our horticultural zone, this plant often is brought indoors for the winter months. Suitable for a trellis, it will need room for height.

An exquisite book with exquisite photographs is "Natural Companions" by Ken Druse with botanical photographs by Ellen Hoverkamp. It will be at home on the coffee table or in your personal library. Along with photos of actual gardens, flowers are cut and grouped together by season or color on black backgrounds. Any of these photographs could be framed to hang on the wall.

One of the most overlooked plants in the landscape is the medium- height tree or shrub. Better Homes and Gardens' publication "Trees & Shrubs" uses beautiful photographs to show trees and shrubs in actual garden settings. …
