Evansville, Ind. Martin Owen Greaney Jr., M. D., Commander, USN Retired Navy, 91, formerly of Evansville, passed away December 5, 2012, in Sacramento, Calif. He was a Veteran of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

Dr. Greaney was born September 15, 1921, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Martin Owen Sr. and Merriam Ruveda (Kelly) Greaney. He was known to family and friends as "Pat" and lived his youth in Needles, Calif. Pat was a starter on the Needles High School Mustangs Basketball Team that went to the California State Finals for small schools, in 1939. He attended Loyola University of Los Angeles where he obtained a degree in biology. He played football, basketball, and baseball while attending Loyola. On the day of graduation from Loyola in 1943, Pat and the entire football team, went to the Los Angeles Police Academy and enlisted in the military. Pat chose the Navy. He was accepted to Creighton University as a Naval Midshipman and pursued a medical degree. He graduated with a Medical Doctorate and was commissioned as officer in the U.S. Navy Medical Corps.

Dr. Greaney's duty stations included Bethesda Naval Hospital, Naval Hospital Mare Island, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as CINCPACFLT Medical Officer, Treasure Island, Calif., and the USS General AE Anderson as Medical Department Head. His ship participated in the Inchon Invasion and the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the Chosin Reservoir. As the conclusion of the Korean War, he was assigned to Balboa Naval Hospital, San Diego. After the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu, he was assigned to the U.S. S. General AE Anderson again to evacuate Vietnamese refugees to South Vietnam during the division of that country into North and South. His next assignment was at the Naval Ordnance Test Station in China Lake, Calif., lif., as Department Head of the Naval Hospital. …
