Late 3s Don't Fall as USI Suffers First Loss ; Eagles Battle Back, but Can't Catch Quincy in Final Seconds

Southern Indiana thought it had a chance to keep its unbeaten women's basketball season alive. But three 3-point shots in the final 30 seconds didn't fall and host Quincy handed the Screaming Eagles their first loss of the season, 65-62, on Saturday.

The Hawks (6-6, 4-0

Great Lakes Valley Conference) had seen their lead dwindle to a point, at 63-62, on Anna Hackert's basket with 52 seconds left. Quincy then missed a shot, and USI (11-1, 3-1) came back down the floor, where Taylor Stevenson tossed up a 3-point attempt.

"Taylor had a good look and her shot looked like it was going to be good coming out of her hands," said USI coach Rick Stein.

But it missed, and the Hawks' Felisha Loggins hit a free throw with 19 seconds showing.

Again, USI set up a 3-pointer, this time by Stephanie Carpenter.

"We set up a play to get her open on the wing, and I told her if she had the shot to take it," said Stein. …
