Goodson Thrilled to Warm the Bench

Article excerpt

Although he grew up just a hundred miles from the Indiana University campus, it wasn't until Steve Goodson joined the University of Minnesota basketball staff six years ago that he finally experienced Assembly Hall in all its glory. "I had been in Assembly Hall before, but I'd never been on the floor during a game," said Goodson, a Tell City, Ind., native who is a special assistant to Gophers head coach Tubby Smith. "It's probably one of the most amazing feelings just walking in there and looking up to see how steep it is. No matter what people say, and I know it's a clich, but you truly feel the tradition when you walk into a place like that."

Goodson will be making another visit today when No. 8 Minnesota (15-1, 3-0) faces No. 5 Indiana (14-1, 2-0) in a huge early season Big Ten contest at 11 a.m. CST.

"I'd be lying to you if I said this game doesn't get an extra mark on my calendar each year," said Goodson. "I have family members who are huge IU fans and that's who they will be cheering for even though I'm on the other bench."

Then there's his mom Kathy, whose allegiance to the Hoosiers is tenuous at best. "She's from Kentucky," said Goodson. "She brainwashed all of us."

That's one reason Goodson ended up going to the University of Kentucky. The other reason was basketball.

Realizing he wasn't going to play in college, he pursued a student manager job at numerous universities. Kentucky was No. 1 on his list, and longtime Wildcats equipment manager Bill Keightley was the first to return Goodson's phone calls.

"I grew up a Kentucky fan and I never thought in a million years they would be the first school I contacted to get back in touch with me," said Goodson, now 29.

Just to make an even better impression, Goodson missed half his classes the next day to drive to Lexington to meet Keightley. …
