Hackert Shines Late, but USI Falls in Third Straight ; LEWIS 71, USI 69

The University of Southern Indiana women's basketball team had trouble keeping its hands to itself, and it cost the Screaming Eagles on Saturday. USI committed six fouls in the first eight minutes of the second half and eight in the first nine minutes. That allowed host Lewis University to sink 10 of 16 free throws en route to a 71-69 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.

The loss was USI's third in a row, dropping its record to 13-4, 5-4 in the GLVC while Lewis rose to 14-3, 7-2.

"In that second half we had some silly fouls," said USI coach Rick Stein. "They were in the bonus early and got into the double bonus early, and that seemed like it kind of fueled their fire."

Still, the Eagles rallied from 11 points down. Sophomore forward Anna Hackert scored 10 of her team-high 19 points over the final 3:47 to pull USI within a point, at 70-69, with seven seconds left.

"Just when it looked like the game was getting away from us, we fought back," said Stein. …
