About eight minutes into Saturday's basketball game, Keith DeWitt threw back his head and shrieked. The 6-foot-10 University of Southern Indiana center had just hit a turnaround shot in the paint - a basket that had pushed the Screaming Eagles' lead over visiting McKendree University to 25-2 - when he suddenly let loose.

It wasn't out of frustration. It was out of joy.

"We were definitely ticked off after we lost at Bellarmine (on Thursday night)," he said. "I was telling the guys, 'Let's do what we can do to dominate the first half.'"

With DeWitt's help, that's exactly what the No. 15 Eagles did on their way to a 94-64 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory.

USI (19-6, 12-5 GLVC) scored the first 14 points of the game. DeWitt started it with a lob pass to Taylor Wischmeier for a layup, continued it with a layup off a Wischmeier steal and pass, then sank a free throw. Next, Orlando Rutledge pushed back in a rebound, Wischmeier sank a jump hook and Rutledge stole the ball and roared in for a dunk, finishing the run with a 3-point basket from the wing.

Meanwhile, USI's defense made three steals and forced McKendree to miss three shots.

When the game ended, DeWitt had totaled 22 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists while Rutledge had piled up a career-high 29 points, 22 of which he collected in the first half.

"It felt good," said DeWitt. "Everybody was moving, the defense was moving and that's the way to play the game. We've still got to get a few wrinkles worked out. …
