Excuse the Pun: Bach's Lunch Series Scheduled at Church

Article excerpt

For my wife and anyone else who contends lame puns are an exclusively male affliction, I offer two words: "Bach's Lunch." That's the title violinist Kathryn "Kitty" Savia has cooked up for the new midday performance series beginning Wednesday at St. John's East United Church of Christ. Like each menu in the Bach's Lunch series, the 11 a.m. program will feature music by J. S. Bach and a packaged meal, or box lunch.

Punning may be the lowest form of humor, but it's a pursuit her family always has taken seriously, Savia said. "My brothers are just disgusting."

In addition to at least one piece of music by Bach, each monthly concert will feature a performance by Sarah Moon, the church's new music director and organist, who shares no blame for the program's title.

"She's extraordinary," Savia said.

The series will open Wednesday with another play on words, "Organ-ic Strings," featuring Moon playing the organ on a program with the Eykamp String Quartet.

The April 3 concert, "Catch a Rising Star," will feature four former prize winners in the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist competition. Violinists Spencer Sharp (2012), Alex Brizius (2011) and Krithik Srithar (2013) and trumpeter Samuel Milan (2013) will perform with Moon, who will accompany them on organ. Savia will join the violinists for the Bach Double Violin Concerto.

Trumpeters and brothers Tim Smith, who plays with the Evansville Philharmonic, and David Smith, better-known as superintendent of the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp., will play with Moon on May 1 in a program titled "Pipes, Pedals and Golden Brass."

Doors open at 10:30 a.m. for all the concerts, which will start at 11 a.m. Admission is $5 at the door. You'll have to reserve in advance, however, if you want the Bach's Lunch's $10 box lunch, prepared by Just Rennie's.

For reservations or information, call the church at 812-473- 0668. …
