Overpass Planned to Ease Crossing Traffic

INDIANAPOLIS - A new overpass should ease the frustrations of Huntingburg residents who are stopped about 30 times per day as trains pass through the town, state and local officials announced Monday. The project is intended to clear a smoother path for traffic along Indiana 231, which runs through the city as its Main Street and will be elevated above the railroad. Officials did not say how much they expect the project to cost.

Huntingburg expects to finish planning and bid out construction of the overpass by 2017. The Indiana Department of Transportation will provide funding for 80 percent of the project's cost, and local government will cover the remaining 20 percent.

"This project creates a great opportunity for the city of Huntingburg to move forward to address a longtime concern, and to focus on economic development advantages," said Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann, who previously represented the area in the Indiana House and was on hand for the announcement. …
