Inmate's Request to Marry Denied ; Judge Points to Safety, Security; Groom Was Accused of Battering His Intended

A Vanderburgh County judge on Friday denied a jail inmate's request to marry the woman he is charged with throwing down a flight of stairs, punching and threatening with a knife. Reko D. Levels, 39, is facing six felony charges: aggravated battery; battery with a deadly weapon; intimidation; battery resulting in serious bodily injury; theft; and robbery resulting in serious bodily injury.

The charges result from a March incident involving Elizabeth Ross, the woman Levels asked to marry and who now says the incident never happened.

The Vanderburgh County Prosecutor's Office, though, has declined to dismiss the charges despite Ross's testifying for Levels at a bond reduction hearing last month and asking prosecutors not to charge him.

On Friday, Circuit Court Magistrate Kelli Fink rejected Levels' request to marry Ross at the jail, citing safety and security concerns.

Levels' attorney also told Fink that he had wanted to ask for change of venue for Levels' trial because of publicity about it, but that Levels did not want that. …
