Multivehicle Wreck on I-64 ; Two Semi Trucks, at Least One Car Involved, Investigators Say

After two hours and 20 minutes in the pouring rain Monday evening, emergency responders were able to extricate a man from a crumpled black sedan on I-64 east of U.S. 41 following a multivehicle wreck that left the westbound lanes of the interstate closed for hours. Investigators with the Gibson County Sheriff's Office are working to piece together what happened a mile east of U.S. 41 in the interstate late Monday afternoon.

Gibson County Sheriff George Ballard said two semi-trucks, one an empty gasoline tanker, hit head-on in the westbound lanes on I-64 about 5:25 p.m.

He said two other passenger vehicles were involved in the wreck. One of the semis was jackknifed in the roadway. The gas tanker was off the roadway a few hundred feet west of the other truck.

Ballard said at least four people were removed from the wrecks and were sent to hospitals.

One man, though, was trapped inside a black sedan from the time of the accident until 7:45 p. …
