Boy to Get Award for Saving Girl from Car ; Fifth-Grader Honored Today

DeSean Smith, an 11-year-old fifth-grader at Vogel Elementary School, will be presented with the AAA School Safety Patrol Lifesaving Medal in a ceremony at 2 p.m. today at Evansville Police Department headquarters. A member of Vogel's School Safety Patrol, he was on duty Dec. 5 on Weinbach Avenue when he saw a car approaching a crosswalk that was not slowing down as a 7-year-old girl was crossing the street on her way to class.

DeSean dropped his flagpole, ran into the street and grabbed the girl as the car, which was estimated to have been traveling about 25 mph, was only about 20 feet away.

His quick action prevented the girl from being struck by the car and seriously injured or possibly killed, according to the Evansville Police Department.

"He's should feel proud. It's a fairly prestigious award," said Mike Right, vice president of AAA public affairs, who will be presenting DeSean with the award.

Right, who has been with AAA for 47 years, said only 407 students have been awarded the lifesaving award since it was initiated in 1949. …
