Micheel Not Exiting Quietly ; Former PGA Champion Wants More Memories

Article excerpt

Winning the 2003 PGA Championship has had its perks for Shaun Micheel. For one, it presented the former Indiana University standout with the opportunity to headline media day for the second annual United Leasing Championship at Victoria National, a Web.com Tour event that will run June 24-30.

Micheel, 44, also rode that "major" win into The Masters and a lengthy exemption on the PGA Tour, which since has run out. He even was invited to play practice rounds and the Par-3 Contest at the 2013 Masters as a former major winner. He declined.

"I'm not ready for the ceremonial exit," said Micheel, who has won more than $4 million professionally. "I think there's a lot more great golf for me to play."

Right now, though, the issue is "where" for Micheel, who is still exempt on the European Tour after playing extensively overseas last year.

"I need to focus on playing in the United States," he said, "but I'm not fully exempt and there's not a lot of room. I'm not going to play in Monday qualifiers, so I need sponsor's exemptions."

After missing three cuts in three Web.com Tour events this year, that includes the United Leasing Championship.

"I'll be writing soon," Micheel said Monday. "But there are a lot of former winners, even major winners, on the Web.com Tour. It's all very competitive."

Tim Benton, a vice president of business affairs for the PGA Tour, said a lot has changed in the past year.

"We're going more international with PGA Tour Latin America and a PGA Tour Canada," he said. "Players from those tours can make the PGA.

"We've also made significant changes in the numbers of players (50) that move from the Web.com to the PGA Tour. It means you have to make room for them, so we suspect this will mean more name players coming to the Web.com Tour."

Re-enter Micheel, who took little prompting to recount his win in the 2003 PGA. …
