Victoria National Crew Was Up Early to Prepare for Playoff

NEWBURGH, Ind. - Monday morning's one-hole playoff victory by Ben Martin in the United Leasing Championship might have ended with a whimper when only Martin made par, but it was amazing the four- man playoff even started. It was made possible by the monumental effort of 35 technicians under the supervision of Victoria National course superintendent Matt Weitz.

"Never in my life have I gone through so much work on one hole to get it playable," said Weitz. "These guys all did an incredible job."

Weitz said the effort began at 5 a.m. before the crew was pulled 45 minutes later for lightning. Then they came out for two more hours of intense work before the playoff started a little after 9.

There were nine men with rakes fluffing the rough and manicuring traps and 10 more with squeegees, forcing standing water down drains.

The green was mowed and rolled and two fresh cups were cut as blowers howled to help move more water. The playoff finally started at 9:07 and ended 21 minutes later with Martin the winner. …
