'100 Things to Do' a Hit at Library ; Crowds Enjoy Eclectic Events

The Evansville Vanderburgh Public Library continued its 100th birthday celebration Sunday afternoon with a spirited Zumba class inside its Downtown front lobby - and 99 other activities spread out all over the central library grounds. There were exhibits inside and outside the building. They included a miniature tennis net and two disc golf holes set up just outside the front doors, live bees and chickens, arts and crafts and free demos.

Just feet from the Zumba demonstration - which about 30 people joined - librarian Marilyn Wilkerson was strumming a ukulele. Several people stopped by Wilkerson's table and tried their own hand at the small stringed instrument, even over the music and occasional clapping and hollering of the workout going on in the lobby.

"Most people smile when they see ukuleles because they're so cute, and everybody wants to pick them up and try to play it, especially kids," said Wilkerson, who has been playing the instrument for about four years.

Library spokeswoman Miranda Knight said while the number of 100 different activities was chosen to continue the library's centennial celebration, the goal of Sunday's event was to showcase opportunities that people haven't had a chance to try. It wasn't just library employees and volunteers doing the demonstration, either; there were several businesses and organizations manning booths as well.

"These are a lot of things that people probably never thought they would ever learn and have never thought about learning, she said during the event. "It's just a chance for people to come to the library and discover a lot of different activities."

Evansville resident Deena Talbert brought her two children, Audrianna, 13, and Caleb, 11, to the event. …
