Motivate Kids to Overcome Homework Hurdles

We're just a few weeks into the school year, and parents across the Tri-State are already struggling with the age-old question of how to motivate their children to do homework. Looking back on their own school experience, many adults may recall times when they didn't want to do their homework, either It's not uncommon for kids to hate homework or struggle with it.

As adults, we realize how important it is to develop the discipline of doing what is expected, no matter how much we dislike it. In hindsight, we have a greater appreciation for homework as a building block for learning and education as the foundation for success.

The difficult task before every parent is to somehow teach children the value of learning (and homework) even if the subject seems pointless. It can be quite a challenge to help unmotivated students see the bigger picture and the potential impact on almost every facet of their future lives.

As you evaluate your own strategies and think upon how to most effectively motivate your child to do homework, consider some of the following suggestions.

First, remember the big picture for yourself, as well as your children. It's OK if they fight and rebel against homework. As time unfolds, they will love and respect you for the time you took to help and encourage them to do their best.

Make a habit of doing homework. Schedule a time in your household when everyone is expected to take care of their homework on a daily basis, even you.

Do not just tell children to do their homework and leave them to it. Check in with them frequently, help them as needed or learn along with them.

Try using rewards and incentives for the completion of homework. For example, give younger children the chance to choose a fun activity or outing when they complete 90 to 100 percent of their homework assignments in a month. …
