Leader of Toys for Tots Best of Year ; He Praises Volunteer Help

The local coordinator for the United States Marine Corps' Toys for Tots program that puts Christmas gifts in the hands of families in need was named coordinator of the year by the organization. Kelly Williams, humbled by the nomination but more focused on the program and local volunteers than himself, said the award is highly coveted across the organization's 742 coordinator sites.

"Finally, we've gotten to the point where we're being recognized and getting coordinator of the year. And I say 'we' because I don't like taking credit for it. Although I am the coordinator, there are a lot of dedicated volunteers," Williams said.

Williams, now a Vanderburgh County Sheriff's deputy, served three years in the Marine Corps in the 1980s. Without a Marine Corps Reserve in the area, the organization relies on Marine veteran associations to oversee the program.

Eight years ago, he helped form the local Toys for Tots program when he joined Marine Corps League River City Detachment 1090, which currently serves Vanderburgh, Warrick and Posey counties. …
