Cattle-Raising, Public Service Fodder for Comedian Mayor

Article excerpt

Drew Hastings takes his day jobs very seriously, but raising cattle and serving as mayor of Hillsboro, Ohio, provide plenty of fodder for the nationally recognized comedian's weekend stand-up appearances. He expects to draw on his experiences wrangling steers, city council members and citizens when he performs in The Victory on Saturday with the Bob & Tom Comedy Show. He'll share the stage with comics Donnie Baker and Tim Bedore and host Kristi Lee on the tour.

Hastings, a former polo player who has also worked in trucking, document shredding, field archaeology and acting (on several network television pilots), has been a professional comic for two dozen years.

He regularly appears on the syndicated Bob & Tom Show, which airs locally on WGBF 103FM, as well as on national network TV and Comedy Central, where his "Irked and Miffed" special is still available for download.

In addition to all that, Hastings has raised cattle on the Ohio farm he bought seven years ago. He was elected as Hillsboro's mayor in 2011.

Even those who voted for him probably didn't know what to expect when he took office in 2012, he said.

"I think they were shocked when they got a mayor who was a pretty adept businessman. I think they thought I would be a joking, ribbon-cutting guy who was going to play at being mayor," he said.

Hastings lives in Hillsboro, where he puts in 10-hour days, three and four days a week as mayor of his city of about 6,500, about 60 miles east of Cincinnati, and he manages a 40-acre farm outside of town, where he relies a lot on automated water and feed systems to raise cattle for beef.

While he treats both jobs seriously, humor helps with each, he said.

"I call my cattle the walking dead," he said. "Hey, they don't know."

He also employs comedy in the mayor's office to help lighten tense moments, he said. …
