North Girls in Ninth at State Golf Meet

North struggled out of the gate at the Indiana high school girls' state golf finals on Friday to stand in ninth place before Saturday's final round at The Legends near Franklin, Ind. "We started out slow and then it started to rain and we just didn't get the job done," said North coach Ken Wempe. "We simply made too many double and triple bogeys."

It left the Huskies 35 strokes behind team leader Carmel at 304. The rest of the top 10 is Penn 319, Zionsville 322, Hamilton Southeastern 328, Noblesville 331, Valparaiso and Yorktown 333, Martinsville 336, North 339 and Lake Central 340.

"We talked after the round, and the girls were not happy with how they played," Wempe said. "They feel bad about it, but this won't keep them down.

"After our talk some of the girls went to the practice range and the others went and putted. One thing I know is they'll come out ready to play (Saturday). They'll try and play their best."

Senior No. 1 Taylor Howerton started slowly, according to Wempe, and never recovered, finishing with a 15-over 87. …
