Veterans Parade Planned for Today ; Riverside Start 2:30 P.M

Article excerpt

If you're in or near Downtown Evansville Saturday afternoon, the organizer of the city's annual Veterans Day parade wants to see you on Riverside Drive. "The veterans have always shown up to be in the parade," said the parade's co-chair Garry Hisel "The problem that we have always faced is getting people out to watch the parade. It's not that much fun or good to have a parade, if you don't have people to watch the parade. But we continue to do it because it is the right thing, and our veterans deserve to be honored and respected by the community."

Hisel said he expects up to 400 veterans to take part in the parade, which is in its fourth year. Any veteran is welcome to join in the event, but organizers ask that they sign up before it starts.

The parade will start at the Tropicana Evansville parking lot at 2:30 p.m., but participants can sign up starting at 12:45 p.m. in the parking lot.

From Tropicana, the parade will go along Riverside Drive to Cherry Street and then head back toward Tropicana. On its way back, the procession will stop near the Walnut Street intersection for a short program, which is scheduled to include remarks from Evansville Mayor Lloyd Winnecke.

The parade and the program are sponsored by the The River City Thunderbolt MVCC and others including the American Legion Post No. 265.
