County Health Officer to Step Down [Corrected 01/14/14] ; Nicholson Has Been a Doctor since 1955

Dr. Ray W."Nick" Nicholson plans to leave his post as health officer of the Vanderburgh County Health Department at the end of the year. Nicholson said Monday his contract expires Dec. 31, and at age 83, he has decided to take life a little easier.

He has been health department director for the past seven years.

Nicholson said he hopes to continue being active in the community, as a leader of the Tri-State

BetterInvesting Club and administrator of the Medical Reserve Corps, which is housed at the health department.

A successor to Nicholson has not been chosen yet by the health department board.

Nicholson, a 1955 graduate of Indiana University Medical School, has worked nearly all his life - since age 10.

He began in the summertime in his family's local Federal Produce, which included a warehouse and a string of local grocery stores.

After school in the wintertime, he and his sister taught produce workers how to read.

Nicholson's longest work stretch was with St. Mary's Medical Center, where he worked for more than 50 years in family medicine starting on Aug. …
