Article excerpt

PARADISE - Castle High School senior Katie Malach couldn't help but smile Saturday after she and the Knights won their first girls' sectional title since 2004-05, at Castle. The Knights totaled 505 points and snapped Mount Vernon's streak of eight straight titles as the Wildcats placed second with 388.

"It's just really exciting and a proud moment because we haven't won it for nine years. To finally win it my senior year, I'm grateful to have the team I do," Malach said. "To be able to leave here and know that I helped out the team to achieve certain goals, like winning a sectional, is a great feeling. I'm really proud that I could help them do that."

Malach qualified for three events at the state meet: the 200- yard medley and freestyle relays and the 50 freestyle. She also could receive an at-large bid in the 100 freestyle.

"Last year I went with like that same time and I made the at- large," Malach said. "I think there is a pretty good chance."

Castle's swimmers decided to celebrate their championship by helping some of their coaches, fans and teammates into the pool.

"Well, the boys have always done it in past years when they have won and we haven't won in forever," Malach said. "They all knew it was coming; they all lined up over there waiting."

Malach said what she will remember most about swimming for the Knights is all of the craziness over the years.

"We're around each other all the time," Malach said. "It's all the memories and friends I have made over the years."

Olivia Treski set a new sectional record, 4:59.88, in the 500 free, breaking her own 2012 record of 5:03.08. Christie Jensen also broke her own record of 55.62 seconds from 2013 with a time of 54.80 in the 100 butterfly, while Mount Vernon's

Samantha Gowdy broke Jensen's record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56. …
