EVANSVILLE

Scrabble contestants spell out literacy support

For the 11th year, area wordsmiths can face off over Scrabble boards to test their spelling skills against one another while helping those still struggling to decipher the simplest of sentences.

The 2014 Letters for Literacy Scrabble Tournament will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 22, at Ivy Tech Community College, 3401 N. First Ave.

Players of all ages can enter, spelling for prizes and recognition in the Competitive division or playing for laughs in the Just for Fun division.

Registration is $50 for each team of 1-3 players. All those who register by Friday will receive a T-shirt. Late registration will run through Feb. 20.

Funds raised through registrations and a silent auction at the tournament will help fund The Literacy Center, a nonprofit agency.

Registration extended for Upward Soccer league

Registration for the spring Upward Soccer League for boys and girls ages kindergarten through fifth grade at Mount Pleasant Church, 8900 Baumgart Road, in Evansville has been extended to Saturday.

The final evaluation will be held 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday in the gym of Oak Hill School. The evaluation process takes approximately 15- 20 minutes to complete. Participants should wear gym shoes.

Players must be registered and evaluated by this date to participate.

The first practices begin the week of March 10, with the first games beginning March 29.

Homecoming scheduled at Marion Civic Center

The Truthseekers's Homecoming 2014 will be held Feb. 20-22 at the Marion Civic Center.

The annual homecoming will include gospel concerts at 7 p.m. each day. On Thursday night, featured performers are Ivan Parker and Brian Free; on Friday, Greater Vision and Mark Trammell; and on Saturday, Whisnants and Triumphant Quartet.

Prayer breakfasts will also be held at 9:30 each morning at the following churches: Thursday, Whiteash Baptist; Friday, Harvest Time Church; and Saturday, Lone Oak Baptist. …
