USI Women Stifle Parkside, End Brief Slide ; Defense, Rebounding, Hackert Power Eagles to Victory

Defense led to the University of Southern Indiana's women's basketball victory as much as offense on Saturday. The visiting Screaming Eagles held Wisconsin-Parkside without a point for 12 minutes early in the second half en route to a 58-45 victory.

"The defensive end is something we work a lot on," said USI coach Rick Stein. "To make runs you have to get consistent stops on the other end. They had a lot of possessions in that run and we were able to get stops."

Meanwhile, the Eagles got points. Junior forward Anna Hackert, playing in her second game since missing two games with a concussion, earned a double-double with 16 points and a season-high 17 rebounds. Junior forward Mary O'Keefe added 14 points and six rebounds as the Eagles - ending a two-game losing streak - raised their record to 12-5 overall, 6-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Rangers (6-11, 2-7) stayed close in the first half with the help of seven 3-point baskets. …
