Eagles Get along Fine without Nelson ; Forward Will Have to Sit out Saturday's Game

At least one person isn't making a big deal about Aaron Nelson's absence from the University of Southern Indiana men's basketball lineup. "I would say it's not really that big of a difference," said senior point guard Lawrence Thomas.

The 6-foot-8 Nelson will conclude a two-game suspension Saturday for what coach Rodney Watson said was a violation of team rules. Still, the Screaming Eagles must miss a player who averages 19.8 points and 13.0 rebounds while putting together a school-record- tying 18 double-doubles in points and rebounds this season.

Except they coped just fine Thursday night. They beat visiting Maryville 64-61 with 6-8 senior Taylor Wischmeier getting his first double-double since November with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, Nelson's replacement, 6-9 senior Chuck Jones, scored 12 points.

Thomas said he has a job to do no matter who's playing.

"We get a lot of inside-outside action with me and Aaron," said Thomas, who scored four of his 10 points during the Maryville game's final four seconds to clinch the victory. "But I still have to lead the team.

"No matter who's playing or who's not playing, your job can't slip. I have to try to stay focused and lead the team as best I can."

The 22nd-ranked Eagles (18-4, 10-4 Great Lakes Valley Conference) will have to remain focused Saturday when they host the University of Missouri-St. Louis (13-9, 7-7) at the PAC. Tipoff is 3:15 p.m.

UMSL has one of the conference's better players in 6-7 junior Tylor Wimbish, who's shooting 61.4 percent from the field overall and 62.9 percent in league games.

"He can score over both shoulders," said Watson. "He can post up, he can step out and shoot 17-footers and he's got excellent hands. Then, when you over-help (on defense), that starts the rotation where they pass the ball so well."

That is, Wimbish gets the ball to his open teammates beyond the 3-point arc. …
