Father, Son Referees Get Call for Historic Sectional

It sounds like it could be the name of a law firm. Senning & Senning - or maybe Senning and Son.

Dave Senning, however, envisions a more relaxing partnership with son, Jason, as they make the rounds of Southern Indiana's local courts.

"You know what, it's like going fishing with your son," said Dave Senning. "You have a good time, enjoy your times together and talk about things."

Better yet, they don't need to clean fish when they're done.

"Yeah, we don't have to clean fish," he said, chuckling.

Nor do they have to make commercials, chase ambulances, file lawsuits or oversee real-estate transactions. However, the Sennings always do things by the book when it comes to the laws of the game they've been hired to enforce. And this week they may have even put their names in the record book for Indiana high school athletics by becoming the first father and son to of-ficiate a boys' sectional together.

They were among the five officials assigned to the Southridge Class 3A Sectional, working every game with a different of-ficial on the three-man crew.

Jay Wille, sports information director of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, knew of no other fathers and sons who have officiated together in the postseason. Brian Holtz, who makes the Southern Indiana Officials Association's postseason assignments, couldn't recall any previous father and son referees, either.

"And I've been an official for 27 years," said Holtz.

Dave Senning has been officiating high school and basketball games for 29 years, but admits he had never given any thought to one day making history when he convinced Jason to slip a whistle around his neck.

"After he got out of college, that's when they started three- man crews, and I asked if he'd like to do it," said Dave Senning. "It's been a thrill working with him ever since. …
